About the event
Fungi are essential for the functioning of our ecosystem and our day to day lives. The way they gain their nutrients determines their roles. The reproductive structures of fungi come in many amazing and varied forms, some most unexpected. Let’s not forget the part fungi play in lichen!! Our event will be an exciting journey of discovery.
Saprotrophic fungi, decomposers, break down dead organic material and recycle nutrients back into the environment. An essential role particularly here in Australia where we have such nutrient poor soils. Not so good if it’s your wooden veranda rails!! We’ll look for examples of Saprotrophic fungi at work.
Mycorrhizal fungi are soil fungi associated with plant roots. It’s said that up to 90% of plants are associated with these fungi. The fungi gain carbohydrates, sugars from plants which are able to use photosynthesis to gain energy from sunlight. As fungi are unable to do…
